Cycling enthusiasts at Glenaire have found more than just a place to ride. The community’s cycling group – “Glengears” – offers much more than a chance to explore local greenways. It provides friendship, adventure and another reason to enjoy the active lifestyle at Glenaire.
Launched in 2023, Glengears brings residents together once a month to cycle paved greenways throughout Cary, Raleigh and Durham. Wellness Director Sheri Sampson and Wellness Coordinator Tom Woolrich accompany every ride, making each outing safe, social and enjoyable.
Glenaire takes care of all the logistics. Residents' bikes are transported to each destination in a U-Haul while participants travel comfortably by bus, making it easy to enjoy the experience without worrying about transportation.
The group was created after Glenaire's team recognized that many residents who enjoyed the community's cycling studio were also avid outdoor cyclists. Glengears gives them an opportunity to continue doing what they love while building meaningful connections with neighbors who share the same passion.
"There are two things that make Glengears so special," resident Ken Russell says. "The camaraderie of riding with people who share a common interest and having transportation for both us and our bikes to greenways we couldn't easily reach from Glenaire. We always know the trail difficulty ahead of time and everyone rides at their own pace. Faster riders may go farther but we all meet back at the same place and time."
Rides typically last about 90 minutes, giving residents plenty of time to enjoy the trails. On some outings, the group continues the fun with lunch at a local restaurant or brewery. One ride also featured a catered bagged lunch from Glenaire, giving everyone another opportunity to relax and enjoy each other's company.
"The social aspect is incredible," Sheri points out. "When everyone gets back on the bus after a ride they're buzzing with excitement. It's almost childlike. Spending time outdoors, being active and sharing the experience with friends helps people feel young again."
Participants range from their early 70s to late 80s, proving it's never too late to embrace an active lifestyle. As Tom puts it: "Everyone can ride at their own pace and cycling gives residents a wonderful sense of freedom."
Glengears is just one of the many resident groups that help make Glenaire an engaging place to call home, offering opportunities to stay active, build friendships and discover new adventures together.
