The Village at Brookwood recently welcomed Austin Locklear as its new Associate Executive Director, bringing with him years of senior living leadership experience and a passion for serving older adults.
Originally from Pembroke, N.C., Austin's journey into senior living began while attending East Carolina University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in public health and a master's degree in public health with a healthcare administration concentration. During college, he worked as a server at Cypress Glen, a life plan community in Greenville, N.C. – an experience that would ultimately shape his career path.
"It was there that I discovered how much I enjoyed serving older adults and building relationships with residents," Austin says. "What drew me to this field was the opportunity to make a direct impact on people's lives. I find the greatest joy in being present, helping others and creating an environment where residents feel valued and cared for every day."
Before joining The Village at Brookwood, Austin spent eight years at GlenFlora, a skilled nursing community in Lumberton, N.C., where he served as Executive Director. In his new role, he oversees Healthcare working closely with nursing leadership and clinical teams to ensure residents receive high-quality care and support.
"I am passionate about making sure our residents receive the highest quality of care possible," Austin says.
Since arriving at The Village at Brookwood, Austin has been especially impressed by the community's culture.
"What stands out most is the collaboration," he says. "There is a genuine spirit of teamwork here. People are always willing to help one another, and I have really enjoyed getting to know both the residents and team members."
Austin describes his leadership style as communicative and hands-on, believing that strong leaders should lead by example and remain approachable.
Looking ahead, one of his goals is to enhance engagement opportunities within healthcare by expanding activities and creating even more opportunities for residents to stay connected and involved.
"I want residents to feel connected and engaged," Austin says. "We have a great foundation in place, and I look forward to building on that by creating meaningful experiences that enhance quality of life."
Outside of work, Austin enjoys spending time with his wife, their 1-year-old son and their dog. He is also a golfer, who the residents at The Village of Brookwood calls the “ringer”, and an avid car enthusiast who enjoys attending car meets whenever he can.
As he settles into his new role, Austin is excited about the future and looks forward to helping The Village at Brookwood continue to thrive while ensuring residents receive exceptional care and meaningful opportunities to stay engaged.
