A new chapter is underway at Glenaire as Michael Williams steps into the role of Executive Director, bringing with him more than 30 years of senior living experience and a deep passion for serving older adults.
Michael joins Glenaire after serving as Vice President of Operations for Lifespire of Virginia, where he oversaw operations for five senior living communities across the state. In that role, he focused on strengthening organizational processes, streamlining systems and identifying opportunities to enhance operations across each community.
His experience spans nearly every level of senior living. Throughout his career, Michael has led continuing care retirement communities, standalone assisted living communities, skilled nursing centers and for-profit and nonprofit senior care organizations, giving him a uniquely broad perspective on leadership and operations.
For Michael, senior living has never been simply a profession – it has always felt like a calling.
“Working in senior living felt like it was my calling to work with the older population,” Michael says.
After graduating from James Madison University in 1989, Michael spent several years managing and supporting 4-H Centers through the Virginia Cooperative Extension at two locations before entering the senior living field in 1995. He then pursued his nursing home administrator certification through an administrator-in-training program, where he completed CNA training and gained hands-on experience in direct care settings. That early foundation shaped his people-first approach to leadership.
Michael describes his leadership style as open, collaborative and communicative.
“I believe in creating a team that understands expectations, feels empowered in their roles and knows their voice matters,” he says. “I value feedback, partnership and open communication. My goal is to support the team, and give them the tools they need to succeed”
As he settles into his new role, Michael says one of his top priorities is building relationships with residents and team members while continuing the momentum already established at Glenaire.
“My predecessor, Ben Stevens, left things in great shape,” Michael points out. “I want to take what I’m inheriting and build upon that. My focus is on continuing the good things already in place while identifying opportunities to refine and strengthen what makes Glenaire so special.”
Michael says he understands leadership transitions can bring uncertainty, and he wants residents to know preserving Glenaire’s culture is a top priority.
“Glenaire has a strong partnership between residents and leadership, and I want to further enhance that,” he says. “I want residents to feel comfortable asking questions, sharing feedback and knowing their voices are valued.”
What stood out most to Michael during his transition to Glenaire was the warmth he experienced from both residents and team members.
“The welcoming spirit here was immediate,” he says. “Everyone was kind, positive and encouraging. You can feel the culture the moment you walk in.”
Outside of work, Michael enjoys hiking, spending time outdoors, tackling home projects and preparing to welcome two grandchildren in the near future.
With decades of experience, a collaborative leadership style and a passion for serving others, Michael’s arrival marks an exciting step forward for Glenaire’s future.
