Hidden Helpers, Lasting Impact – How The Crew Brings Purpose and Support to The Village at Brookwood

At The Village at Brookwood, a life plan community in Burlington, NC, community isn’t just something you feel – it’s something you see in action every day. And sometimes, it’s the work happening quietly behind the scenes that makes the biggest difference.

That’s exactly the case with The Crew – a dedicated group of resident volunteers whose mission is rooted in compassion, service and support.

The Crew steps in during times of transition – whether a resident is moving to a different level of care or has passed away. During these moments, families often face the overwhelming task of clearing out a home. Once families have removed the items they wish to keep, The Crew takes over – thoughtfully sorting, organizing and preparing the remaining belongings.

Their work is both practical and purposeful. After carefully sorting through each home, items are handled in a variety of meaningful ways. Some are sold right here at The Village at Brookwood through in-house and estate sales, giving residents, team members and even the public an opportunity to shop for quality furniture, antiques, artwork, jewelry and home décor. Other items are donated to local charities, ensuring they continue to serve others in the greater Burlington community.

But the true impact of The Crew extends far beyond the items themselves.

Proceeds from the sales directly support The Village at Brookwood’s Resident Assistance Fund, which helps ensure residents who have outlived their financial resources – through no fault of their own – continue to receive the care and support they need. It’s a powerful reflection of the community’s commitment to caring for one another.

“For me, the most meaningful part of being involved is helping ease the burden for families,” says Sally Sutherland, a member of The Crew. “We’re able to step in during a difficult time, support our community and know that everything we do is contributing to something positive.”

Founded in 2024, The Crew has grown into a collaborative effort that brings together residents in a variety of ways. While a core group handles the process of clearing homes and preparing items for sale, many others contribute by volunteering at events – serving as greeters, cashiers or assisting with moving larger items.

Together, they create a system that is both efficient and deeply rooted in care.

Items collected are stored in a dedicated staging space within the community, where sales are hosted throughout the year. These estate sales have become a highlight within the community, with residents and guests alike looking forward to discovering unique treasures while supporting a meaningful cause.

This spring, that impact will grow even further. In April, the estate sale will join forces with the community’s annual garage sale, creating one larger event that brings residents, team members and the public together. Proceeds will be shared between the Resident Assistance Fund and the Team Member Assistance Fund – expanding the reach of support across the entire community.

For residents of the future, The Crew offers a glimpse into what makes life at The Village at Brookwood so special. It’s a place where neighbors look out for one another, where purpose doesn’t retire and where even life’s transitions are met with care, dignity and community support.

“Being part of The Crew gives me a strong sense of purpose,” Sally adds. “Not only are we doing something positive for our community and residents’ families, but it also keeps us connected, engaged and supporting one another.”

It’s this spirit of connection and generosity that defines The Village at Brookwood – and ensures that every resident is part of something truly meaningful.
