At Glenaire, staying active often comes with laughter, friendship and a little friendly competition. One of the most popular ways residents are doing just that is through pickleball.
Blending elements of tennis, badminton and ping pong, pickleball is played on a smaller court using paddles and a lightweight perforated ball. At Glenaire, the sport has grown into much more than a game — it is a community.
With so much interest from residents, Glenaire formed a dedicated pickleball interest group that now includes around 50 players. Participants are divided into four skill levels — chrome, silver, gold and platinum — ranging from beginner to advanced. Each group has its own scheduled play times and occasionally plays with neighboring skill levels to keep things fun, social and just challenging enough.
“I love the camaraderie, the spirit of friends who care, share accomplishments and encourage and support one another. The game is a vehicle for deep social interaction while exercising and having fun together here at Glenaire. We love having our own Sports Court!” says Fern White, a member of the pickleball interest group.
What truly sets Glenaire’s pickleball program apart is its welcoming atmosphere. The groups are co-ed and inclusive, and no matter your experience level, there is a place for you. Many residents start as complete beginners and quickly build confidence, skills and friendships along the way.
For those who are curious but not quite ready to commit to an interest group, Glenaire also offers drop-in pickleball hours. Residents can also reserve court time through the community’s convenient Sports Court booking system for casual play with friends.
The community’s fitness facility is open 24 hours a day, giving residents the flexibility to stay active on their own schedule. Wellness Coordinator Thomas Woolrich is also an avid pickleball player and often provides one-on-one support and guidance for residents who would like extra help learning the basics or improving their game. It is just one more way Glenaire’s team meets residents where they are and helps them feel supported.
“Many residents were brand new when they started, and now they play every week. The friendships formed on the court often carry over into daily life. I regularly see pickleball friends grabbing lunch, having dinner together and spending time together outside of the game.” Thomas says.
While the atmosphere is mostly lighthearted and fun, pickleball at Glenaire can also be as competitive as residents want it to be. Some players have even competed in the North Carolina Senior Games in the 75–80 age category, proving that the sport offers opportunities for growth at every level.
Above all, pickleball at Glenaire is about connection. It is a chance to stay active, try something new and build genuine friendships in a welcoming environment. Whether you are picking up a paddle for the first time or bringing years of experience to the court, you will find encouragement, camaraderie and plenty of fun waiting for you.
