Learning Never Retires at River Landing at Sandy Ridge

Published: October 27, 2025

At River Landing at Sandy Ridge, curiosity doesn’t stop at retirement – it thrives. Through the Free University at River Landing, or “FURL,” residents continue to learn, teach and share their passions in a community that celebrates lifelong growth.

The idea is simple: anyone can be a teacher, and anyone can be a student. Each semester, residents and team members step forward to lead classes inspired by their past professions, personal interests or lifelong hobbies – from gardening and knitting to music history, the FBI and even alien life. Some courses are intimate and hands-on, while others draw large audiences eager to learn something new. A few even take the learning off campus for field-trip-style adventures.

Since its launch in 2019, FURL has become a hallmark of engagement at River Landing. The program was founded by River Landing resident Jim Killacky, who brought with him decades of experience from the national Free University Movement.

What began as an idea to tap into the “treasury of experiences and knowledge” among residents has grown into a thriving community tradition, with more than 100 courses offered and over 800 registrations per term.

“River Landing is a busy and active place, and if FURL wasn’t working, it would simply go away,” says Jim, retired FURL Coordinator. “There’s a great thirst for learning here. FURL gives people the chance to share what they know, discover hidden talents in their neighbors, and feel more connected to the community.”

“One always hopes for learning and its perpetuation,” Jim adds. “Residents who have taken courses are often amazed by the preparation their friends and neighbors put into creating a great experience for everyone. Even those who don’t take many classes still benefit through the conversations that follow or simply by knowing their community is richer because of the learning and camaraderie that FURL brings.”

The program is guided by a resident-led work group and a River Landing staff representative, ensuring that classes stay as diverse and engaging as the people who call River Landing home. Recent sessions have even included staff-led offerings, such as a behind-the-scenes kitchen tours with the Dining team and a computer technology safety course from a Maintenance technician Tim Morse.

“I love that River Landing offers a program like FURL because I am a firm believer that lifelong learning plays such a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for our residents.  As individuals continue to age, offering ongoing educational opportunities can foster cognitive health, personal fulfillment, and social connections. Getting to see residents learn from one another has been so rewarding,” says Allison Crossman, the River Landing staff member FURL representative.

As the upcoming semester approaches, themed around America’s 250th anniversary, residents can look forward to another lineup of creative and thought-provoking courses that celebrate history, curiosity and connection.

At River Landing, learning doesn’t end; it evolves. Through FURL, residents continue to find purpose, share wisdom and prove that curiosity is a major key to a vibrant and fulfilling retirement.
