The program pairs students with residents whose academic backgrounds and skills best match their needs. Some tutors are retired teachers and professors who love the chance to keep sharing their knowledge. Others are simply passionate about helping the next generation succeed. No matter their background, every resident tutor brings patience, encouragement and care to each session.
“I’ve always loved to teach – I believe it’s what I was made for,” says Peggy Potthast, retired math professor and director of the Resident Tutor Program. She sees tutoring as a way for residents to give back to the team that supports them every day.
The students range from elementary children all the way up to college age. Some are even Glenaire team members furthering their own education – a meaningful way for residents to support the people who care for them each day.
Parents consistently express how grateful they are for the program, often sharing their positive experiences with other team members about the benefits of the program. Each year the list of students grows longer, and Peggy says she may soon need even more tutors to meet the demand.
Tutoring sessions are held once a week in quiet, open lounge spaces at Glenaire. Residents prepare with books, games and activities tailored to each student’s needs, while students bring laptops and school materials. To support the effort, other residents donate school supplies and books – a true example of community spirit.
Even those who cannot physically tutor still participate through an advisory group that helps guide best practices and strengthen the program. Every year, tutors gather for a special Resident Tutors Volunteer Appreciation Day to celebrate their impact, reflect on their accomplishments and enjoy fellowship together.
This program is much more than academic help. It gives residents a renewed sense of purpose in retirement, strengthens bonds across generations and provides team members with an incredible family-friendly benefit – free, one-on-one tutoring for their children or themselves. It’s just one example of how Glenaire is not only a wonderful place to live but also a supportive, family-friendly place to work.
