Speak Now or ‘Furever’ Hold Your Bark

River Landing throws its first doggie wedding, and the whole community shows up to celebrate

Love was paws-itively in the air at River Landing at Sandy Ridge, where the High Point-area community gathered to witness the bark-worthy union of two of its most adorable residents – Lacey, a pint-sized Yorkie, and Guinness, a dashing miniature Schnauzer. Hosted in the Healthcare Multi-Purpose Room, it was standing-room-only as residents and team members packed the space to witness this tail-wagging celebration of love, laughter and community.

Lacey, proudly walked down the aisle by her “mom,” Carole Gassert, met Guinness – the charming four-legged “son” of Kay and David Picha and “grandson” of MaryBeth and Bill Lynch – at the altar as music played and smiles filled the room. The space had been transformed with a festive balloon arch, custom cookies and party favors, all designed by residents and team members. The wedding program, vows and photos were thoughtfully created by the community, proving that at River Landing, it really does take a village, even for a doggie “I do.”

The idea for the event came from the resident-led Dog Club, one of many interest groups at River Landing that keep life vibrant and full of purpose.

“We originally got the idea from my sister, who saw a dog wedding at another community,” said Kay Picha, Dog Club member and proud mother of the groom. “We planned ours in the healthcare multipurpose room so our biggest fans – the healthcare residents – could attend. It was open to the entire community, and it turned out to be the biggest event of the doggie social season.”

But this club is more than just puppy love and party planning.

The Dog Club supports pet owners with helpful information on boarding, veterinarians and grooming. They’ve created dog calendars, sold dog treats to support community projects and even helped fund the dog park sign. Club members, both furry and human, make regular visits to residents in healthcare and assisted living, bringing cuddles, joy and memories of pets past.

“The best part of the wedding was the excitement it created,” Kay added. “Staff and residents came together to decorate, bake, sing the dogs’ favorite songs and celebrate. Everyone wanted to see the happy couple and hear the vows. It was a funny and fun time – and such a great example of the heart and energy here at River Landing.”

From the first bark to the final dance, Lacey and Guinness’s big day was a hit – and a perfect reminder that life at River Landing is filled with connection, laughter and unforgettable moments.

After saying “I do,” the newlyweds trotted off to honeymoon on “Doggy Island” in Florida – living their best (retired) life, one paw print at a time.
