From Serving the Community to Joining It – Why Two Former Team Members Now Call Scotia Village Home

Published: July 28, 2025

Daphne Bean and Sylvia McLean spent years working at Scotia Village, but their connection runs much deeper than job titles and daily tasks. They each dedicated their careers to helping others find a home at Scotia Village – and when the time came, they chose it for themselves. After seeing the community from the inside out, both women believed in the mission, the people and the promise of lifelong care so strongly that they returned not as employees, but as residents.

Sylvia was the very first director of sales at Scotia Village – hired before the main building was even constructed. Her office sat in a trailer in the parking lot, and she took great pride in filling the community with kind, neighborly people. Over her 25-year career, she helped shape the warm, welcoming culture that defines Scotia Village today.

Daphne joined the Scotia Village team in 2013 after a long career in textiles. She served in several roles – starting as the marketing and sales assistant, later becoming Marketing Director, and eventually serving as the move-in coordinator. In her sales role, she loved sharing all the community had to offer and felt the peaceful setting and thoughtful design made it an easy choice for older adults. As the move-in coordinator, she enjoyed helping new residents choose finishings.

For both Daphne and Sylvia, the decision to retire at Scotia Village was deeply personal. Each had close family members – Daphne’s sister and Sylvia’s mother and sister – who lived at Scotia before they did. Witnessing the quality of care and sense of community their loved ones experienced only strengthened their belief that Scotia Village was the right place to spend their retirement years.

When Daphne officially retired, she and her husband moved into the community. Just two nights later, her husband experienced a medical emergency. Thanks to the on-site response system and dedicated care team, help arrived immediately. “The timing was a blessing,” Daphne says. “We were where we needed to be, and I couldn’t have handled it alone.”

Today, both Daphne and Sylvia are enjoying the vibrant lifestyle they once helped others discover – one full of friendship, peace of mind and connection. Sylvia attends weekly happy hours with friends, while Daphne appreciates the neighborly spirit where residents genuinely care for one another.

Their journeys are a powerful reflection of what makes Scotia Village so special – a place where even those who knew it behind the scenes choose to stay for life.
