Paddles Up! Well-Spring Residents Take Wellness to the Water

Published: July 28, 2025

Summer is in full swing, and residents of Well-Spring, A Life Plan Community in Greensboro are making the most of the season by soaking in the natural beauty just beyond their doorstep.

One of their favorite warm-weather traditions? Kayaking at nearby Lake Higgins, a peaceful spot just a mile down the road that has become a go-to wellness outing for this adventurous crew.

For the past four years, a group of about 15 residents has packed up their sun hats, water shoes, sunscreen and plenty of cold water to enjoy a relaxing morning on the lake. It’s a lighthearted tradition that proves just how vibrant life at Well-Spring can be, filled with outdoor activity, community connection and simple joy.

Robin McCloskey, Director of Wellness at Well-Spring, says kayaking is an ideal low-impact activity for older adults.

“It’s light cardio that supports heart health and upper body strength,” she explains. “You can go at your own pace. And being out on the water is also amazing for your mental health. It’s peaceful. It relaxes your mind.”

The group typically heads out early before the summer heat sets in. Lake Higgins offers kayak rentals for just $15–$20 a day, making it an easy and accessible wellness activity. Residents usually spend about two hours out on the water – some solo, others with a partner in two-person kayaks. There’s even a 94-year-old resident who regularly joins the group, proving that staying active has no age limit.

From paddling along the shoreline to sharing stories on the dock afterward, the experience is about more than exercise. It’s about connection with nature, neighbors and a lifestyle that makes retirement feel full of adventure.

The kayaking trip is just one of many ways Well-Spring encourages residents to live well physically, mentally and socially. Whether you’re a lifelong adventurer or just discovering the joy of the outdoors, there’s always something to explore as a resident of Well-Spring.
