River Landing Invests in Its Team with Employee Scholarship Program

Published: July 28, 2025

At River Landing at Sandy Ridge, signs along the entrance proudly read “World’s Best Staff” – and they mean it. The Colfax community thrives because of the compassionate, dedicated team members who care for residents every day. That’s why River Landing is committed to supporting their futures through the Employee Scholarship Program, a meaningful initiative that helps team members pursue their educational goals, no matter the field.

The Employee Scholarship Program is a great opportunity for any River Landing team member who’s in good standing and enrolled in school part time or full time. This year’s recipients are pursuing a wide range of fields – from nursing and law to education, engineering and more. It’s an exciting way River Landing invests in the future of its team.

Applicants go through a brief interview process with River Landing’s executive team and panel of residents who are eager to hear about their aspirations. One common question: “Where do you see yourself in 10 years?” The answers are often as ambitious as they are inspiring – from CNAs looking to become RNs to high school students chasing big dreams.

The Employee Scholarship Program began nine years ago in memory of Mary Walter-Shafer, the former Director of Marketing and Sales who had a deep passion for education. Thanks to the generosity of River Landing residents, the fund has grown dramatically. What began with six recipients and $3,000 has grown to an incredible 40 recipients and $46,000 awarded this year alone. Even more inspiring – all 40 team members who applied were granted a scholarship.

Resident support makes all of this possible. Some donate in memory of loved ones such as the Edna and James Landon Employee Scholarship, created in honor of Edna’s love for learning. Others give because they’re continually impressed by the talent and work ethic of River Landing’s team, such as the Pat and Howard Burkart Employee Scholarship.

Whether inspired by a personal legacy or simply a desire to give back, the generosity of River Landing residents has been instrumental in shaping the scholarship program. Their support helps working parents, young professionals and students, alike, take the next step in their educational journey – and that investment pays off every day in the quality of care residents receive.

Applications open each May, and recipients are honored at a heartfelt awards ceremony in July. The event is filled with proud family members, supportive coworkers and cheering residents – all gathered to celebrate the future of River Landing’s team.

Just another way River Landing continues to support the people who make this community such an extraordinary place to live and work.
