Where Retirement Tees Off: River Landing’s Active Lifestyle

Published: June 27, 2025

Tucked away in a peaceful oasis on the outskirts of Greensboro, River Landing is redefining what retirement can look like. As a Life Plan community, it offers more than just a place to live — it's a vibrant environment where residents stay active, try new things, and genuinely enjoy life. One of the community’s most beloved amenities? The beautifully maintained nine-hole golf course, offering scenic views, fresh air, and a chance to stay engaged both physically and socially.

Before River Landing became the dynamic community it is today, the grounds were home to a full 18-hole golf course. That rich legacy lives on through both the current nine-hole course and the stunning clubhouse, built in 2020, which now serves as a social and recreational hub. Open to both residents and the public, the clubhouse offers indoor and outdoor dining seven days a week, with views of several sprawling fountains surrounding the course, and hosts a wide range of events — from wine tastings and spring socials to weddings and fundraisers. Whether or not you play golf, there's something here for everyone to enjoy.

Golf and Grounds Director Scooter Nance has been part of River Landing’s story for more than 30 years. His love for the game began as a teenager, and today he brings that same passion to the community. “The residents here are fantastic,” he shares. “It really feels like family.” Thanks to Scooter and his team, the course remains in pristine condition and stands as a point of pride for everyone at River Landing.

For residents like Debby Allen and Neil Shields, the golf course is more than just a picturesque backdrop — it’s an essential part of their lifestyle. “Golf is the perfect sport in retirement,” says Debby, who moved to River Landing nine years ago after visiting 16 other communities. “It gets you outdoors, keeps you moving, and it’s a great way to meet new people.” Neil agrees. Though he only picked up the sport seriously after moving in six years ago, he now plays a few times a week and appreciates how the game keeps both his body and mind sharp.

River Landing encourages every resident to stay active, learn new skills, and connect with others. Neil’s story is a perfect example — it’s never too late to discover a new passion. Debby plays in a weekly women’s golf group, and there’s also a co-ed group for those who enjoy a bit of friendly competition. “River Landing residents can just show up and play,” she adds, noting how welcoming and accessible the course is. Even a 93-year-old resident still frequents the course regularly — a powerful testament to how golf supports long-term wellness and vibrant living.

At River Landing, life doesn’t slow down — it gets better. And the best part? The nine-hole golf course and clubhouse aren’t just for residents. The public is welcome to play a round or enjoy a meal, making River Landing a true community gathering place for all.

To reserve a tee time or make dining reservations, call the Pro Shop at (336) 668-1171 or the clubhouse hostess stand at (336) 389-4099.

As Debby puts it best, “The people, the management, and the team truly set the tone.”
